DMSO-What is it used for?

DMSO or Dimethyl Sulfoxide has many uses, below is a short list of areas DMSO is used and a brief breakdown with descriptions.



  1. Many products are classified as a solvent (a product that helps breakdown other substances) some examples are,

  • Water

  • Alcohol

  • DMSO

  • Acetone

DMSO makes a great solvent for many reasons,

  • Breaks down difficult products.

  • Naturally bio degradable.

  • Low vapour pressure.

  • Non-toxic.

  • High boiling point.


  1. Drug Delivery - Used to transport drugs across membranes without destroying the integrity of the membrane.

  2. Topical Application - Used as a topical anti-inflammatory and pain killer for human and animal use.

  3. API - Used as an active pharmaceutical ingredient for the treatment of Interstitial Cystitis.

  4. Cryopreservation - Used to preserve cells and biological tissue for a variety of end use applications. 


  1. As a safe and biodegradable way formulate agriculture chemicals.

Industrial Manufacturing

  1. Used extensively in the manufacture of semiconductors primarily as a stripper.

Non-Toxic Cleaning

  1. A strong solvent that is very effective in cleaning where other solvents fail, combined with its low flammability and volatility make it a safer alternative.

Scientific Analysis 

  1. Used in analytical applications due to the wide range of products it will dissolve and a consistent pure background that doesn't contribute interferences.
